BUILDER BRIEFS Weekly

Grok Bots

> Oct 13 to Oct 20, 2026█

A week of people running more bots than they can keep track of, then building more bots to keep track of them. The useful posts had a number, a fix, or a wiring diagram. Most of the rest were screenshots of enthusiasm.

01// costs, modeled

A routine that wakes every 5 minutes costs 12 times one that wakes hourly

$397 vs $33 a month

A builder priced out one routine at Grok 4.6 API rates: every 5 minutes is 8,640 wake-ups a month and about $397, once an hour is about $33. Same bot, same task. Putting a cheap change check in front of each full run took their six-bot overnight model from $397 to $45, which they put at 89% less. This is a cost model at API prices, not a subscription bill, and the post ends in a link to their article.

Before shortening a routine's interval, add a step that checks whether anything changed and exits if not.

02// breakage, workaround

Browser dead on every site, normal internet fine: reset the computer

A user's bot browser failed on every site while the bot's regular internet kept working. Support told them the separate connection the browser uses to reach the internet had dropped. Resetting the bot's computer brought the browser back, and support said a permanent fix is coming, with another reset as the stopgap. In a separate report, another user says every DNS lookup on their bot computer has returned 198.18.0.1 since roughly early October, even when forced to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8, which breaks non-HTTPS access to their own servers.

If the browser fails but curl works, reset the bot's computer before rebuilding anything.

03// build, wiring

Coding agents that ask a bot instead of waiting for a human

A builder gave their Codex and Claude threads three small CLI tools that call back into their Grok Bots: list_bots, ask_bot and notify_bot. A webhook routine on the bot side routes each call to the bot that owns the question and wakes it. The bot checks its memory, email and connectors, then answers back into the thread. They only get pinged when no bot can figure it out. No numbers on how often that happens, which is the number worth having.

04// routine, maintenance

Twenty bots, one nightly inventory, two stale rules found

20+ bots, refreshed nightly

A user with more than 20 Grok Bots has one bot keep a table of all of them: title, section, job, connectors, routines. It refreshes every night. They also put tags like Finance or Customer-data in each bot's title, which they note is not a documented feature. Filtering by one client tag, the inventory bot checked those bots against their instructions and found a missing route to a newer bot and a leftover rule about a deleted one, then fixed them one at a time.

Once you pass a handful of bots, have one of them audit the others' instructions for references to bots that no longer exist.

05// usage limits

One shared limit, two products, and $20 of extra credits gone

100% used, 3 days to reset

A user who moved to the unified plan last week says they used to hit separate limits for Grok Bot and Grok Build. Now both sit at 100% with three days until reset, and all $20 of their extra credits went before they reached the usage limit, they say without knowing how. Their workaround, having bots hand heavy work to a terminal coding tool, now drains the same pool. For contrast, another user on the $30 plan reports 18% of their weekly limit for 58M tokens of Grok Bot use alone.
